Propeler Film production company was established in 2001, after Boris T. Matić produced the first Croatian independent fiction film
Mondo Bobo (1997), directed by Goran Rušinović, and one of the most watched Croatian documentary films
Novo, novo vrijeme (2001) by Rajko Grlić and Igor Mirković.
Propeler Film’s projects are jointly produced by Boris T. Matić and Lana Matić with the support of many ongoing associates and their primary mission if to carefully select those projects that promote groundbreaking filmmakers. They continuously collaborate with production companies from Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, in addition to numerous successful partnerships on the home turf.
Propeler Film’s filmography today consists of almost fifty fiction and documentary films which have over the past two decades won more than 150 international film awards. Less conventional projects like
Sex, Booze and Short Fuse and
Zagreb Stories opened the doors to international festivals to many Croatian first-time filmmakers, and an important place in the catalogue is taken by the films directed by the acclaimed Croatian filmmaker Antonio Nuić. Propeler Film also boasts many outstanding co-productions with Slovenia, Serbia, Belgium and Bulgaria, including co-production of films by Srdan Golubović, one of the finest contemporary Serbian authors, whose film
Circles won a jury special mention at Sundance, while his recent title
Father won the Panorama section at the prestigious Berlinale (2020).
The Propeler Film team has also launched and implemented the projects like
Zagreb Film Festival and two VoD platforms. The
croatian.film platform provides an overview of Croatian short film production and
Kino Europa Online features a selection of contemporary international auteur cinema which comprised the backbone of Zagreb’s Europa cinema’s repertory between 2008 and 2019.
